These days it’s essential that you do your research when looking for a newborn photographer, ESPECIALLY with all these new photographers popping up all over the place and calling themselves newborn photographers after photographing a baby or two. If quality and safety is at all important to you, you need to find someone with lots of specialized training -(Why Choose Me)- and years of experience -I have five years experience and have photographed well over 250 newborns (man, I wish I would have kept exact track!).
Newborn Photography is all I d0 and I love the hell outta this job! 🙂
There is a certain flow of poses that I go through during a session. Although I can properly achieve each pose, there are times when baby won’t like a particular pose. And I’m ok with that. I am in tune with baby at all times, and if they are ever uncomfortable at all, I stop and flow into another pose. Now, that’s not to say I don’t try my damndest to do the pose, it just means that if I attempt it the second time and they send me cues that tell me they are absolutely hating my guts at that moment, then I just move on. I’m also really picky about perfecting each and every pose and not about just going through the motions of all the poses. That’s why you can tell the difference between myself and other ‘newborn photographers’ out there. My poses are perfectly executed and every.single.detail is spot on. Every detail, such as exact highlights and shadows on their faces, faces facing up and out so you can see their perfect little features, perfectly flat fingers, smooth blankets, tight smooth wrapping, just to name a few. Also, you won’t catch me half-assing poses just to ‘get the shot’. I’m a perfectionist! (And I haven’t exactly figured out if that’s a bad or good thing yet lol 🙂
I always, always start with the Froggy pose. Why the froggy pose? Well, no other pose flows into it. And let’s just agree that it looks super awkward. But in saying that, babies (when it’s done CORRECTLY, with the proper support) love it. The reason they love it? Well when we’re planning you session, I will tell you too bring me a tired and hungry baby. As soon as you get here, we will strip baby down into a diaper and we’ll feed them until they are milk drunk and cannot eat anymore. A full baby is a happy, sleepy baby. Essentially, the froggy pose is, you guessed it, they way you hold baby to burp them. A-ha. So we feed and then we burp (POSE). Remember though, this is many years of experience talking. Now this pose is done as a composite pose. That means that we take multiple pictures ands then put them together into Photoshop to create the perfect photo. And let me tell you, I’ve had numerous parents tell me they had no idea that was how it was done. They tell me they’ve either had it done where the photographer just ‘balanced’ baby (Oh hell noooooo!) or they just couldn’t figure out how it was done (cue fun little lesson from me). Now before I go any further….if someone tries to do this pose without you being close by and asking for your help, or does it and lets go of baby expecting them to just ‘balance’ there….PLEASE, for the love of God, scoop up your precious baby and run for the hills!
Now from the Froggy Pose, we go into the Tushie Up Pose. This pose is a staple in newborn photography and one of the sweetest poses. It showcases all of baby, including their adorable little back rolls and their cute little toesies.
Right after the Tushie Up Pose, I move into the Side Lie Pose. In this pose, I simply bring their legs out from under their bums, and roll them onto their side a bit.
From here we go to the final pose that I do in my beanbag workflow, the Head On Hands pose. It’s just so perfect when it’s done. It shows off their little faces and really brings out their cute features. I also vary up my angles when shooting this pose. I love, love, love the profile image I get just by moving myself around.
From the Head on Hands Pose, I will then transfer them to a bucket, while keeping them in the Head on Hand Pose. The less tummy to back, back to tummy the better. Everything is all in the transitioning from pose to pose with minimal movement.
From here, I will wrap baby up for the Potato Sack Pose. Sometimes, if baby just will not settle at all, which can happen if they’ve traveled a few hours to see me, or most often I find in the winter they do better with this pose first then we’ll do this pose right off the bat.
It’s also around this time that I will get peed or pooped on. If you’re at all worried that your little one will make a mess, please don’t. Honestly, it happens every session. I’m usually the one that ends up messy. And everything gets washed after every session. Shit happens!! Literally lol! 🙂
From the Potato Sack Pose I go into the Laying in a Prop Pose. This is quite possibly the easiest pose baby does in the studio. It includes baby wrapped up in a bowl, crate/box or tiny bed. I can easily switch out the outer wrap from the Potato Sack Pose to another wrap to coordinate with the setup I have chosen for this pose.
From the Laying In a Prop pose, I go into the All Wrapped Up Pose.
Sometimes, if time allows, I like to pull their little arms out of the wrap and do the Tucked In Pose. I love the simplicity and naturalness of this pose.
While the ultimate goal is to have baby sound asleep for our session, sometimes…sometimes baby doesn’t want to sleep, or may wake up halfway through and are content and happy just looking around. Rest assured, when this happens, I just run with it. Some of my clients most favourite images are the ones that we capture while baby is awake. I’ve gotten some incredible eye contact out of these tiny little people. I just wrap them up and shoot away. Most times they will fall asleep again quite quickly once wrapped all snug and cozy.
And last but not least, we do the sibling and parent poses with baby. These are by far my favourite photos. I love how siblings will just love on their new brother or sister. And the most important photos of all are the ones of mom and baby together.
I hope this gives you a little insight into all the various poses that go into a newborn session. Clients tell me all the time that I have the patience of a saint (if you ask my kids they’ll disagree with that statement lol). But really I think my patience stems from my immense and overwhelming love for these tiny humans <3
